Hey, you weirdo!

Nice to see you again.

What am I up to? Glad you asked.

I'm adding more chapters to my queer sci-fi erotica, 🌹Decadent Plague, joining a DnD (Dungeons & Dragons) group, and eating tons of walnuts.

Have you ever played DnD? I haven't. Excited to find out how.

Are you craving a spicy stud x stud couple... and millions of tornadoes? I am writing their reality as we speak.

Now, onto the...

Fun Sci-fi Quiz: Do you know the answers?

1. What is the supercomputer's name in Stanley Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey'?

2. In the 'Star Wars' universe, what is the color of Yoda's lightsaber?

3. Who directed the 1977 sci-fi film 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind'?

Remember your answers. The truth'll be revealed at the end ;)

Marketing tips

Connection.

Most of us were born with the desire — even if we spend a lot of our time alone.

But when it comes to getting the word out about our products and services, we stumble.

Frustration reigns.

So, instead of swallowing the whole thing, let’s break marketing into tiny chunks.

You ready?

Tip #1: Pull out your phone

And check your content on it.

Most people browse, buy, and share on their phones.

Just because desktop looks good doesn’t mean mobile does.

Examples to test

  • X (Twitter. Xitter in this article) profile image
  • Website content
  • LinkedIn banner

I’m simplifying everything this year, so I modeled my Xitter banner after Niharikaa Sodhi’s.

Here’s what it looks like on mobile.👇🏾

banner says ask me questions about marketing tips, mindset shifts, and sci-fi. - read decadent plague

The image doesn’t overlap with the default buttons and text = freakin’ win!

Tip #2: Design small

Despite what many tell you, a wider phone, not super long, helps — and technique is golden. Have lots of skills in different areas. Remember, you’re awesome.

Now, back to marketing. If you’re coding your own website, design for mobile first.

Make sure your site is responsive (i.e., it resizes).

To do

  • Check on many real devices (preferred) and browsers. IE and Firefox especially.
  • If your friends are Gollum with their devices, use an online device emulator like the Mobile First extension (shows 50+ devices :))

You can also use Inspect Element in many browsers.

Inspect lets you temporarily change HTML and CSS to see how your website will look.

Also, it shows a lot of device emulators.

How

Right-click an element on any page, scroll down, and select “inspect.”

Ooo, take a peek at ALL THE OPTIONS below. So pretty! Techy stuff makes me happy. I’m fanfemaling hard right now.

Quick, hand me some water. 🚰

Emulators include iPhone, Samsung, iPad, Surface Pro, Next Hub, and you can put in custom dimensions

Things to check

  • Widths, images, text size, spacing, padding, margins
  • Links. Very important. Make sure your links work correctly

If you have side-by-side content on desktop, use the following in CSS so it'll stack on mobile (you can learn more about CSS Media Queries at W3 Schools):

@media only screen and (max-width: 600px) { .INSERTYOURCLASSNAME { width: 100%; } }

Tip #3: Add alt text

Be like Frank's hot sauce—put that $#!t on everything.

To images, videos, gifs. Making your content accessible boosts your audience, includes people, and can make you more money.

Alt text helps blind/visually impaired folx understand your content.

Example

Xitter > settings > accessibility > "Receive image description reminder"

This setting will show a reminder before you post.

Easy.

Tip #4: Spell hashtags right

For my fellow writers, spell #writingcommunity correctly.

I JUST spelled it wrong. 😅

There's a hashtag with three ems. If you choose that one, your post will go to the writing void.

The wrong hashtag is a default… and I know exactly why. 🤣

Tip #5: Collect today

Start your email list today. Get your audience's email addresses.

This is one of the MOST IMPORTANT marketing tips.

But why?

Here's the benefits part of email friends

  • You can talk to them in their internet cave
  • You can get more personal
  • You're not competing with everyone else
  • You can give exclusive content, updates, and deals
  • You can sell easier

How to start a newsletter

  • Ghost
  • Substack
  • Beehiiv
  • Gumroad
  • Convertkit
  • Your own website

I'm doing the last option. I want to control my internet presence, so I've created a free way that lets me have:

  • unlimited subscribers
  • unlimited newsletters
  • monthly or annual subscriptions
  • multiple templates
  • no platform fees
  • few restrictions

I love making my own baskets, y'all!

Tip #6: Obsess

Over giving to other people.

Focus on how much knowledge you can share. How you can make other people's lives easier.

You have tons to share, and people need it.

You do not have to be perfect.

Just your once-in-an-eternity self.
